Wormhole or Wonder?

Where are you looking? In our text today, Bildad and his buddies are still browbeating Job. poor Job has lost everything and is agonizing about the bottom falling out of his life. far from comforting, his so-called friends continue to accuse him of doing wrong no matter how much he protests. Bildad sums things up by saying that they’re all no better than worms anyway and Job shouldn’t expect any better. Bildad is looking down the wormhole, as it were. He’s Mr Gloom and Doom.

Now, GOD does want us to realize we are not GOD and that we need to depend on Him. In Isaiah 41:14, for example, the LORD compares the distraught people to worms. But he doesn’t want them to stay in that mindset. The apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 6, goes down a whole, slimy list of wormy behavior to those he is writing to and says “And such WERE some of you!” Then he goes on…”BUT You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God!” (Emphasis added). Once we realize our unworthiness before GOD because of sin it is to bring us to the place where we can confess and be made new creations by His Spirit. Metamorphosis takes place and we go from wormlike caterpillars to born-again butterflies.

Unlike Bildad, Job sees the higher picture. he doesn’t know why GOD is letting him suffer but he knows that, having soared to see the immense glory of GOD, he can’t live as a worm any longer. If we continue to think of ourselves as awful and feed ourselves worm food we will continue to live like a worm in the filth of sin.

Don’t be so fixed on your lowliness as a worm that you forget the wonder of redemption as a butterfly.
Job 25-26
