Body Snatchers

Job 1:21 The LORD gave and the LORD takes away; blessed be the Name of the LORD!

Remember those movies where some alien creature takes over people’s bodies & they are no longer themselves? We call them horror movies because the idea of someone or something stealing our bodies is about the most horrifying thing we can think of. But that horror is carried out every day of your life & you are the guilty party.

Everybody knows the story of Job (pronounced Jobe) from the Bible. All of his riches & children & even his own health are wiped out within hours. Although he starts out with our verse for today, that it was the LORD’s to give or take at will, he eventually starts complaining that GOD’s not acting like He’s supposed to & questioning why. The only answer he ever gets from GOD is basically “I’m GOD and you’re not. Deal with it.” Then he realizes that his first response, that we only use what GOD gives us for a time, was the right one.

That sounds terrible until you realize you do the same thing as a parent or pet owner or plant owner. You can’t & don’t and aren’t expected to make someone or something less wise than you completely understand your decisions.

The trauma & horror come when we become the body snatchers. This is why the Terrible Two Toddler stage is terrible. Until then babies scream and cry because they have no control over their bodies. But at two we suddenly get the keys to drive the body. This gives us the false assumption we can do what we want with it. Until a larger body (parent) stops us. But even those parents don’t realize they’re misbehaving just as badly to THEIR Father, GOD.

Whenever you do or say or think you are in control of life, you are being a body snatcher. You are trying to steal your life from GOD. And though your life is a gift from GOD, He still is in control and has rules for how that gift is operated, like a Father giving a teenager a car. They may operate the car but only within the limits of the physical qualities of the car & requirements of the Father.

Abortion is terrible because women are not only attempting to steal their own bodies from GOD the title holder but to steal the lives of babies riding in that body. And they never see the irony that they claim “unwanted” pregnancy as if they had no control and “I can do what I want with my body” in the same breath.

Not only do we steal the keys to our bodies but we sell what is not ours to the enemy of our souls. We sell ourselves to sin like a teenage girl giving the keys to the car her father gave her to use responsibly to a drug addict pedophile and going along with him for the ride. Yet all the time deluded into thinking she’s in control.

There’s only one solution: For the true owner of our lives to take possession back. As the Apostle Paul says in
1 Corinthians 6:19-20: “Do you not know that your body is the temple (the very sanctuary) of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you, Whom you have received [as a Gift] from God? You are not your own, You were bought with a price [purchased with a preciousness and paid for, made His own]. So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.” (Amplified Version)

GOD came to earth as JESUS Christ. As fully man He subjected Himself to GOD the Father perfectly though He went through every temptation we do but as fully GOD He could have spared Himself all of that. He chose not to do so and instead to suffer and even die for us so that He could take our place in punishment just as we tried to take His place as LORD of our lives. When He rose from the dead He gave us the opportunity to hand the keys of our lives back to Him and have Him hand us the keys to eternal life in His Name.

Now we ride with Him and realize our lives, physical and spiritual, are His and best used under His control. His Holy Spirit is in the driver’s seat. We are His because He gave us our bodies and all we do with them is for Him. And when He chooses to take them it is His right to do. We are His in Spirit because His Spirit comes into our hearts and keeps us in check when we would grab the wheel and drive off into death. Instead He takes away our sin, gives us new life as new creations back in His kingdom and safely on the road Home.
