Smiling to Death

Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.” (NAS)

It’s the holidays; a time to share warm times with friends. Imagine that you’re having a group of friends over for holiday dinner. Because there are quite a few folks, you’ve laid out a buffet style and are sitting across from one of your friends, smiling and eating, when he suddenly grasps his throat. Gasping, he looks at you and shouts “there were no mushrooms in this were there?” You keep smiling and saying, “Why, yes, there were!” “But you KNOW I’m ALLERGIC to mushrooms! WHY DIDN’T YOU WARN ME?! I COULD DIE!” he squeaks out, his throat closing and his face swelling. “Yes, of course I know. You’re my best friend. But I didn’t think it was right to be judgmental and tell you what to eat or inflict my opinion on you.” You think he heard you but aren’t sure as he’s now laying under the table.

Ridiculous, right? And yet, the spiritual version of this story is going on all over the world at this moment, and especially during the Christmas season in the United States.

Christians who know the Scriptures know that JESUS leaves no room for doubt. He claims to be GOD the Son, the Physical representation of the invisible Father, empowered by the Holy Spirit Himself. He is the only means of life after death. There is no other.

Christmas is the time we celebrate the arrival of JESUS on earth as a human child in order to suffer and die in our place to bring us back to the Father because of our turning away from Him which has alienated us from Him forever. Because of our turning away from GOD and choosing “not GOD”, we receive to ourselves all that GOD is not…death, pain, darkness…forever. Accepting what JESUS has done for us is our only escape. By accepting what He has done, and in so doing acknowledging Him as our Master, we freely receive life and light and love forever. That is the joy of Christmas. No matter how cold the snows or desolate the deserts of this life, we have eternal joy before us in Christ…forever.

Others who don’t know all of this are still perishing. Christmas is the time we can most easily share what we know, what we have experienced. And yet we smile across the table as they die within our reach. We don’t want to offend them by saying anything offensive or too “preachy.” We go to “holiday” parties where JESUS is just one among many so-called equals:  Allah, Buddha, Santa…We don’t want to ruin the “magic” of Santa and reindeer because how could imagining a stranger bringing a cheap toy children want for this moment be surpassed by someone who loved them so much that He died so that they could be happy forever?

Most people don’t know any better. But we Believers do. Yet, in the “spirit of Peace”, we sit quietly among lights and ribbons knowing the Truth while those around us who don’t know Christ pass into eternal death forever…as we smile and sing.

Some day there will be a judgment. I wonder if those people we’ve had contact with but were too polite to share the Gospel with will be thankful for our silence. Or if they will say “Why didn’t you tell me?” as they face the pain they chose that we never warned them about.

“Silent Night” indeed.
