Comments on New Schemas for Mapping Pedagogies and Technologies

According to Grainne Conole in “New Schemas for Mapping Pedagogies and Technologies”:

“…there appears to be an irresolvable tension between current educational practice which is essentially individualistic and objective, and the philosophies inherent in Web 2.0 – namely social and subjective. So there are huge tensions between the potential of Web 2.0 and our current educational systems…”

This leads into suggested methods of dealing with this conflict by adapting the need to the tools rather than the “shotgun” approach.  I especially liked the diagram” Pedagogy framework for mapping ‘tools-in-use'” which gives a toolset for how to accomplish this.

This gave what, to me, was an easy to use assessment tool, like a tailor using a tape measure.  Once the needs are determined, the appropriate technology can be “fitted” as appropriate.

There are, however, several problems with this.  Maybe it is just another effort to simplify a complexity that cannot be so easily handled, to ignore the chaos generated.  That is, perhaps it is more to comfort the course designer than to actually deal with what could not be dealt with because it is unknown.  While we can say that this attempt might be the pattern in the chaos that we can use to sort the overwhelming information, that can only be seen by repetitive successful iterations.

Another issue is that this fitting of pedagogy to technology would require the “teacher” to be expert in virtually every one of the technoogies (the tailor must know the materials being used, the tools being used, and how to “fit” it all together, literally).  This is the work of a lifetime, especially with new technologies emerging and existing technology growing literally every day.  (This is another part of the complexity issue.)

For what it is and what it does, the author’s suggestions are a good attempt.  But one wonders if enough is known, given the volitile nature of the knowledge and technologies, for this to work.  Or if knowing is even possible given the complexity inherent in the elements we’re attempting to manage.
