Island Connections

I found my eyes welling up with tears while watching the “Mankind is Not an Island” video on today’s Daily post.  Not only because of the touching content, but because of the connections it made with my events of the day.  I went to the eye doctor today.  My eyes have always been very bad (blind in the left and nearly so in the right) but I’m still able to get by with the one eye despite severe nearsightedness, severe macular degeneration, and retinopathy.  Today I found out from the doctor that connection is not always a good thing because two blood vessels in my central vision of my one “good” eye have occluded (joined) and are hemmoraging.  I must return to see the specialist and get an angiograph on Monday.  Another connection I don’t want…needles in my veins filling me with dye that almost killed my mother in an allergic reaction, and possible surgery that is dangerous in itself and is likely to leave me totally blind.  Perhaps homeless like some of those folks in the video.

The makers of that video are right.  Mankind is not an island, and in connecting whether in groups, networks or collectives we’re joined by human frailty of the mind, body and heart.
